About USTaxGauge

USTaxGauge is an independent reference for U.S. individual income tax data. It exists to answer questions like "what is California's income tax rate" correctly, for the current tax year, with the source attached — and to stop there.

Why it exists

State income tax data is unusually badly served. The figures change every year, several states are in the middle of multi-year rate reductions, and a page published twelve months ago is frequently just wrong. Most of the pages that rank for these questions publish two filing statuses out of four, cite nothing, and carry no indication of which tax year they describe.

The fix is not more writing. It is a properly structured dataset, versioned by tax year, sourced to the states themselves, computed by one tested engine, and rendered into pages that answer the question immediately.

What it is not

  • · Not tax preparation software. It will not file anything for you and does not want your personal details.
  • · Not a personal finance blog. There are no opinion pieces, no listicles and no content published to fill a schedule.
  • · Not a lead generation funnel. No ads, no affiliate recommendations, no referrals to products we have not evaluated — because we have not evaluated any.
  • · Not a source of individual advice. See the disclaimer.

On expertise

You will not find a named CPA, a reviewer byline or a photograph of an expert anywhere on this site. That is deliberate. We do not employ one, and manufacturing a credential would be a worse offence than lacking one.

What we offer instead is verifiability. Every figure names the document it came from, links to it, and records the date we read it. Every calculation runs through one tested engine whose method is written down. Every limitation is published rather than hidden. You do not have to trust us; you can check.

How it is funded

Currently it is not. There are no ads, sponsors or affiliate links on the site today. If that changes, it will be disclosed plainly and it will never affect what the data says — the figures come from state revenue departments, and no advertiser can move them.
