States With No Income Tax (2026)

9 U.S. jurisdictions levy no individual income tax in tax year 2026: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming. A resident of any of them owes $0 in state income tax on wages, whatever they earn.

You will see this list published as seven, eight or nine states, because sources disagree about how to count New Hampshire and Washington. Our count is 9 on a consistent rule: a jurisdiction is on this list if it levies no tax on wage and salary income in 2026. New Hampshire qualifies — its Interest & Dividends Tax was repealed effective 2025 — and so does Washington, which taxes no wages but does levy a separate excise tax on large long-term capital gains.

Before you move for the tax

A zero income tax rate is not a zero tax burden. States without an income tax raise revenue somewhere else — most commonly through higher sales taxes, higher property taxes, or severance taxes on natural resources. Income tax is one line in a household budget, and this site measures only that line. Compare a specific pair of states with our comparison tool, and read what actually changes when you move.
