2026 Federal Tax Brackets and Rates

Seven federal rates apply for tax year 2026: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, 37%. For a single filer the top 37% rate begins at $640,600 of taxable income — and applies only to income above that point, never to the whole amount.

How a bracket actually applies

Being "in the 22% bracket" does not mean paying 22% on everything. A single filer on $100,000 subtracts the $16,100 standard deduction, leaving $83,900 taxable, then pays each bracket in turn — $13,170 in total, an effective rate of 13.17%.

Long-term capital gains rates, 2026

Long-term gains — on assets held more than a year — are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% rather than the ordinary rates above. The gains stack on top of ordinary income, so where they fall depends on the rest of your income. A further 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax applies above $200,000 for single filers and $250,000 for joint filers.
