Why our figure will differ from your return
Every calculation here is a model. It applies each state's published rate schedule, standard deduction and personal exemptions to an income figure you supply. Real returns involve much more than that.
- · We assume the standard deduction. If you itemise, your result differs.
- · We model almost no credits. Child, earned-income, education and property-tax credits can change a bill substantially.
- · We exclude local income taxes entirely, and they apply in a substantial number of states.
- · We do not model retirement income exclusions, recapture provisions, phase-outs, alternative minimum taxes, or the federal income tax deduction that a few states allow.
- · We treat all income as ordinary unless a page says otherwise. Capital gains, dividends and self-employment income are often treated differently.
Each state page lists that state's specific limitations, and the methodology lists all of them in one place.
Tax data goes out of date
Tax law changes, sometimes retroactively and sometimes in the middle of a year. Every data page shows the tax year it describes and the date the figures were last checked against their source. Where we could not verify a state's current-year figures, the page says so and shows the most recent year we could.
We make no warranty that any figure is current, complete or free from error. Check the linked primary source before relying on a number for anything that matters.
When to talk to a professional
Use a qualified tax professional for anything involving: your actual return, residency or a move between states, self-employment or business income, equity compensation, large capital gains, retirement distributions, an audit or notice, or any situation where the amount at stake exceeds what you are comfortable being wrong about.
